Today in a thrilling encounter between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, last ball run out of L Thirimanne lead to the Super over in which Sri Lanka beat New Zealand.
Earlier New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first. The openers added 57 for the first wicket stand in just 7.3 overs before Guptill got out. Rob Nicol and Brendon McCullum then smashed Sri Lankan bowlers. New Zealand batsmen were particularly severe on spinner Ajantha Mendis and never allowed him to settle and get his rhythm. Rob Nicol scored a brilliant half century and was well supported by other New Zealand batsmen on other end. Finally New Zealand were able to put a decent 174/7 in 20 overs.
Chasing 175 to win, Sri Lankan openers provided a flying start as the duo added 80 runs for the first wicket partnership in just 7.2 overs. M Jayawardene and T Dilshan hammered every bowler out of the park before M Jayawardene got out after scoring 44 off just 26 balls. K Sangakkara then continued from where Mahela left. But he was run out after scoring just 21. J Mendis also felt cheaply but Dilshan was firm at one end. He scored 76 off just 53 balls before getting out. Sri Lanka needed 1 run off last ball but L Thirimanne was run out leaving the match tied.
Super over was played to decide the result of the match. Sri Lanka was asked to bat first and they nominated Jayawardene, Perera and Dilshan. Sri Lanka scored 13/1 in the super over and thus set the target of 14 for New Zealand. New Zealand nominated Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor but they failed to score 14 runs and thus lost the match to Sri Lanka.
