Earlier England won the toss and elected to field first. M Jayawardene and T Dilshan opened the innings and gave Sri Lanka a flying start by adding 35 for the first wicket stand in just 4.4 overs. M Jayawardene and K Sangakkara then got out on consecutive balls reducing Sri Lanka to 74/3 in 10.2 overs. T Perera’s good hitting in the last overs helped Sri Lanka post a total of 169/6 in 20 overs.

Chasing 170 to win and keep alive the hopes for semi final berth, England lost L Wright in the third over when the team score was just 16. This wicket triggered the fall of wickets as Malinga took the wickets of J Bairstow and Alex Hales on consective balls reducing the defending champions to 18/3 in 3 overs. Eon Morgan and Samit Patel then raised some hopes for England as the duo took the score to 73 before Morgan got out. From 73/3, England were reduced to 93/7 in 14.1 overs. Some late hitting by G Swarn (34 off 20 balls) and superb 67 in 48 balls by Smit Patel helped England score 150/9 in 20 overs. England needed 26 to win off final over but could manage 6 in that over thus the defending champions were knocked out of T20 World Cup 2012 after being beaten by host by 19 runs.
